Polyurethane wheels are more durable and have a longer lifespan than rubber wheels. They also provide better shock absorption and are quieter, making them ideal for carpeted floors. Polyurethane wheels are also resistant to chemicals, oils, and grease, which can cause damage to rubber wheels.

Caster wheel flat spotting is a common problem for heavyweight applications, where the weight of the load causes the wheel to become flat and distorted. Soft rubber and polyurethane tires are the common wheel materials where this can happen.

These casters last many years without replacement if they are properly cared for. This is the key, proper care and preventive maintenance will greatly prolong caster life, while misuse and mistreatment can lead to premature failure.

Not all are suitable for high temperature use. Of those that are, polyurethane— this typically has the lowest temperature rating, at approximately 180 degrees F. Glass-filled nylon wheels can be used up to approximately 350 degrees (if the casters have the appropriate bearings and grease; see below).
