As the last letter of the alphabet, Z represents the ultimate. That is the reason why the Kawasaki 900 super4 was nicknamed the Z1. Since then, the Z moniker has been inherited by many other models developed to be the ultimate machines in their categories.

The Z1000's four-piston front brakes are stupendous, even compared to the big optional double discs on the original Z1. But so focused is the Z1000 on quickness and responsiveness, that on the Horse Thief Mile, where the Z1 was linear and stable, the front wheel felt ready to tuck under-a disquieting trait at best.

When Honda introduced the CB750 to the market first, Kawasaki postponed the Z1's release until its displacement could be increased to 903 cc and the motorcycle could be marketed in the 1000cc-class. Z1 production began in 1972 as the most powerful Japanese 4-cylinder 4-stroke ever marketed.
